NICO
VASCELLARI
Death Blood War
September 6 - 27, 2006
You are
kindly invited to attend the opening of the exhibition on
Wednesday, September 6th at 8 pm.
Young
artist Nico Vascellari belongs to a generation of Italian
artists who are conquering the international art scene with
an incredible speed. His work has been exhibited in many
international contemporary art institutions, in both in solo
and group exhibitions. His projects are mainly performances;
however, he also employs video, sound and drawings. Video
mostly serves as a documentary of events; however, it is
more than just a mere recording of performances. Video and
audio recordings which are made during performances create
the final image of videos presented in a gallery. Nico
Vascellari is also a singer with With Love, a
hardcore noise band, which is probably why he places
most of his artistic work in a musical context. The
interactive relationship between the artist and the musical
group is often the underlying theme of the exhibition and
its opening event.
The
exhibition in the Škuc Gallery will present a wide range of
his work, including videos, statues, drawings and collages;
there will also be an audio installation and, at the opening
performance, two guests will carve the two sides of a few
metre long trunk to the rhythm of a composite song (remix of
the songs Angel of Death, Reign in Blood and
War ensemble by the group Slayer). Also referring to
the Slayer group is the video Death Blood War,
which was shot in 2005 at the Metal Camp Festival in Tolmin.
The three songs, mentioned above, were also recorded there,
and were used as the basis for a new song entitled Death
Blood War, which will be the musical background of the
exhibition. Handmade vinyl records, collages and lyrics will
also be presented under the same name, and the spirit of
heavy metal and punk music has definitely been captured in
the exhibited sculptures.
An
original music aesthetics also guides the artist's other
work. His drawings feature patterns reminiscent of a chaotic
stave, which most likely turn out to be sketches for clothes
which he meticulously designs for each performance
separately. He also tests the relationships and harmony
between people, with whom he collaborates in a part of his
work – an element the artist toys with in a playful yet
carefully thought-out way. Every story consists of many
smaller segments, which, as a final product, interact with
the exhibition space (in the physical and historical sense),
thus constituting a whole.
