MOBILE ARCHIVE
March 5 – 30, 2008
Curators:
Galit Eilat & Alenka Gregorič
You are
kindly invited to attend the
opening of the exhibition on
Wednesday,
March 5th
at 8 pm at Galerija Škuc.
Prior to the exhibition,
at 7 pm, the curator Galit Eilat will give a
presentation of the Israeli
Center for Digital Art
An archive for video art and digital media
has been operating at the Israeli Center for Digital Art,
Holon for several years now. The archive contains more than
1,200 titles, including works by Israeli and international
artists who have exhibited at the center, and works by
artists who have contributed works over the years. Following
many requests by local Israeli scholars, students, and art
lovers the Center decided to transform the collection into a
video archive open to the public. The archive is intended
primarily to represent contemporary artistic practice. The
majority of works are local and regional (Near East). By
establishing work contacts with similar bodies worldwide
based on the exchange of information, knowledge, and work
collections the Center enables expansion of the archive and
promotion of Israeli artists abroad.
In the past two years the Center has compiled
a catalogue and transformed it into a convenient viewing and
research library, open to curators, artists, art students
and teachers. At the same time, in order to expand the
collection, the Center has been approaching various artists
and asking them to send copies of their works to the
archive. An open call was published on the websites of the
Israeli Center for Digital Art and in Ma’arav (an online
magazine for art, culture and media), while artists were
also contacted directly.
The idea of the Mobile Archive surfaced
during several conversations on the idea of bringing the
archive to Kunstverein in Hamburg and discussing how it
could function there, out of its original context. The
question was how to make the archive dynamic and valuable to
local audiences in different parts of the world. In addition
to presenting a selection of works from the archive, the
Center decided to invite host institutions to include in the
archive up to 25 new works by local and international
artists of their own choice.
The exhibition in the Škuc Gallery has three
parts. The first one focuses on presenting the archives to
the general public, offering visitors to select the
materials they wish to view among over nine-hundred works in
video format. The second part presents four video programmes
curated by Eyal Danon, Galit Eilat, Yuval Orly and Chen
Tamir, respectively, which are screened in a projection room
constructed specially for the occasion. The last part is a
room entitled "One Day, One Artist", which showcases works
by Israeli artists Nira Pereg, Ruti Sela, Nurit Sharett,
Yossi Atia & Itamar Rose, Efrat Shalem and Yochai Avrahami.
The works have been selected by the exhibition's co-curator
Alenka Gregorič at a study visit to Holon and Tel Aviv.
You are kindly invited
to attend a discussion
entitled Archive Frenzy on
Thursday,
March 6th
at 6 pm at Galerija Škuc. The discussion will feature
Barbara Borčić, Galit Eilat, Igor Španjol and Miha Vipotnik.
